Sweetshaw Rig

The walk up Sweetshaw Rig rewards you with views that stretch across the rolling hills of Dumfries and Galloway. It's not a dramatic summit - more of a steady climb through moorland that feels genuinely remote despite being only a few miles from Moffat. You get proper 360-degree views once you reach the top, with the Southern Uplands rolling away in every direction.

This is one for walkers who like a proper leg-stretcher without the scrambling. The terrain is manageable, though it can be boggy after rain, and there's no formal path to speak of - just moorland and your own sense of direction. Allow a good two hours there and back from the car park, maybe longer if you want to linger and actually take in the scenery instead of just ticking it off.

The nearest proper base is Moffat, which sits about twenty minutes' drive away. If you're parking up at Howslack Farm caravan site nearby, this makes for an excellent morning out. It's the sort of walk that works for families with older kids who don't mind a bit of effort, and absolutely spot-on for anyone who wants to avoid the crowded honeypots but still see proper Scottish landscape. Go on a clear day - the views are genuinely worth it, but mist rolls in quickly here and you'll see nothing but grey.
