Sutton Upon Derwent Park

The River Derwent cuts through this stretch of East Yorkshire like it owns the place, and in many ways it does. Sutton Upon Derwent Park is a proper nature reserve where the water does most of the talking - you'll see kingfishers if you're patient, herons doing that statue impression they're famous for, and on a good day, roe deer ambling down to drink. It's not dramatic or towering. What it is, though, is genuinely alive. Walking the paths here feels like you're actually seeing something wild rather than just passing through someone's manicured version of nature.

The reserve works well for bird watchers and anyone who likes a quieter walk away from York's crowds. Families with older kids will manage fine, though toddlers might find the pace slow - there's not much to climb or dash about on. Expect to spend an hour or two depending on how serious you are about spotting things. Bring binoculars and a bird book, or just go and see what turns up.
