Sutton Hill

The walk up Sutton Hill rewards you with proper views across Shropshire - nothing fancy, just good honest countryside stretching towards the Welsh border. It's a modest peak compared to the dramatic ridges further south, but that's rather the point. You get the sense of achievement without needing mountaineering skills, which makes it popular with families and casual walkers from Bridgnorth.

The ascent itself is straightforward enough, taking most people 45 minutes to an hour depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The summit's a bit windswept and exposed, so dress for it, but the reward is genuinely worth the effort - clear days offer views that stretch for miles. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Wheathill and Greenway are both excellent options within four miles - this makes for a cracking half-day outing.

It's best visited in late spring or early autumn when the weather's most reliable and you're not battling midges or mud. Avoid the winter months unless you quite fancy a bleak trudge. Church Stretton Camp and Fish sits further afield but offers another base if you're planning to explore the whole area.

Don't expect crowds or facilities at the top - there's a basic shelter but no cafe or visitor centre. Bring water and a snack. The paths are reasonably well-marked, though a map is sensible. It's genuinely free to visit and requires no booking whatsoever. A solid addition to a Shropshire park holiday, particularly if you're after moderate walking without the rigmarole of larger attractions.
