Stubbing Wood

Walk far enough out from Settle and you'll eventually reach Stubbing Wood, a proper Yorkshire woodland that sits quietly on the landscape without any fuss or fanfare. It's the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident - no visitor centre, no marked trails with interpretive boards, just trees and paths and the kind of peace that makes you remember why you came to the Dales in the first place.

The wood itself is mixed deciduous forest, decent enough for a woodland walk if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Peaks and Pods or The Dalesbridge Campsite just down the road. It won't blow your mind - this isn't Fontainebleau or anywhere dramatic - but on a grey afternoon when the rain's threatening and you've had enough of the limestone scenery, it does the job. Families with young kids will find it manageable. Serious hikers might see it as a brief diversion between bigger walks around Malham or towards Pen-y-ghent.

The real value is in the walking itself. You're looking at an hour or so if you potter through without rushing, longer if you're the sort who stops to look at moss. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right. Summer's too muggy sometimes. Autumn's the winner - the light through the trees is worth the trip alone.

It's free, obviously. No gates, no fees, no nonsense. Just go. The nearest proper town is Settle, where you can grab something decent to eat afterwards.
