Strinesdale Country Park

The moorland around Greenfield swallows you up the moment you step into Strinesdale. It's proper wild - open grassland rolling away with hardly a soul in sight, which makes it all the more surprising given how close you are to the Pennine edge.

This is a walker's spot through and through. The reserve sprawls across decent acreage with paths that let you choose your own level of effort, from gentle strolls to more serious moorland trudges. You're looking at heather, rough grassland, and if you time it right, the kind of light that makes the landscape almost abstract. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a grey one - which is most days up here - it feels properly atmospheric.

The wildlife isn't showy. You won't be spotting golden eagles, but you'll likely see curlews, grouse if you're lucky, and the usual moorland birds doing their thing. It's the kind of place that rewards patience and decent boots rather than a quick photo stop.

Allow two to three hours minimum, longer if you're actually interested in walking rather than just wandering. Families with young kids might find it a bit bleak and feature-light - there's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of. Older kids who like the outdoors will be fine.

It slots nicely into a broader walk around the Greenfield area. If you're staying at Dovestone Holiday Park just down the road, this is exactly the sort of place to base a morning around - free, uncrowded, and genuinely rewarding if you're after space and air rather than attractions.
