Strensall Park

Strensall Park sits just outside York and is properly one of those places locals know about but tourists often miss. It's a nature reserve that spreads across woodland and open grassland, the sort of spot where you can actually hear yourself think. The walk through takes you past mature trees, scrubby bits where birds nest, and clearings that open up suddenly and feel miles from anywhere.

It works best for people who want a proper walk without needing a destination at the end of it. Birdwatchers have a field day here - you'll spot woodpeckers and warblers depending on the season. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before someone gets tired of counting trees, but if you've got teenagers or keen naturalists in tow, there's easily two to three hours of exploring without it feeling forced.

There's no fancy visitor centre or café, which is either refreshing or a downside depending on your mood. Best to arrive mid-morning when the light's decent and before the afternoon gets too hot in summer. Spring and autumn are cracking times - the place has real character then.

It pairs well with the nearby holiday parks. Fox Hill and York Meadows are both solid bases a few miles south, and from either you can be at Strensall within ten minutes. It's the sort of reserve that fits naturally into a park holiday rather than demanding a separate trip - somewhere to slip away to for fresh air between trips into York itself.
