Stowe Hill, Shropshire.

The walk up Stowe Hill takes about twenty minutes from Presteigne, and it's steeper than you'd expect from the map. Worth every step though - the views across the Shropshire border and into Mid Wales open up properly once you clear the tree line, and on a clear day you can see for miles. The summit's marked by a modest stone cairn, nothing fancy, but the sense of having achieved something real is there.

This is one for people who actually enjoy walking rather than just Instagram-hunting. Families with energetic kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the final push a bit of a slog. History types will appreciate the Bronze Age burial mound at the top - there's genuine archaeological weight to the place, though you won't find interpretive boards spelling it out for you.

It's free, obviously, and you can knock it out in under an hour return if you're moving at a decent pace. Early morning visits mean fewer people and better light across the valley. The nearby glamping and lodges at Shropshire Luxury Glamping and Black Hall Lodges make natural bases - both are within striking distance, and this kind of modest, proper hill walk slots perfectly into a weekend that might also take in Rockbridge Park or longer rambles in the area.

No visitor centre, no facilities at the top. Bring water and decent shoes. It's the sort of place that reminds you why people bother with hills in the first place.
