Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome

The grass runways at Stow Maries still look much as they did in 1916, which is rather the point. This working RAF aerodrome near Maldon preserves one of the few intact Great War airfields left in Britain, and wandering the site feels genuinely time-locked - you're standing where pilots scrambled to their machines a century ago.

You'll see the original hangars, including a massive Type C shed that's survived two world wars largely intact. There's a small museum with aircraft, uniforms, and the kind of technical details that will grip aviation enthusiasts for hours but might lose younger kids fairly quickly. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously, less if you're just popping in for the historical atmosphere.

This works best for military history buffs and aviation types rather than casual visitors. The site's still operational, so access can be restricted during flying days - worth checking ahead. It's free to wander the grounds, though donations are welcomed.

If you're camped at The Courts Campsite or Hoe Mill Lock just down the road towards Maldon, this makes a solid morning detour before heading to the coast. It's not flashy, but there's something quite moving about standing on a runway that's hosted over a century of British aviation history. The flat Essex landscape hasn't changed much either, which adds to the feeling of stepping back in time.
