Mighty Oak Brewing Co. sits just outside Maldon, a proper working brewery where you can actually watch beer being made rather than just drink the finished product. The whole operation is refreshingly unpretentious - you'll see the tanks, the brewing kit, the actual process. They do tours and tastings, which is where most people get the real value. The ales themselves are solid Essex fare, nothing trying too hard to be trendy.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Hoe Mill Lock, Mill Beach Seaside Resort, or Osea Leisure Park are all within three miles. After a morning on the water or mucking about at the seaside, a brewery visit and a pint makes genuine sense. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the technical bits dull after twenty minutes. Walkers using the Blackwater estuary trails often swing by.

You'll want to ring ahead about tours and opening times - this is a working operation, not a visitor attraction with set schedules plastered everywhere. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the full experience with tastings.
