Hazeleigh Hall Wood

You'll find Hazeleigh Hall Wood just outside Maldon, a proper Essex woodland that feels genuinely removed from the holiday park crowds clustered around the town. It's the sort of place where you can lose an hour wandering between mature trees without seeing another soul - which is either brilliant or slightly eerie depending on your mood.

The wood itself is unremarkable in the grand scheme of ancient Essex forests, but that's precisely why it works. No visitor centre, no car park attendant, no signs telling you where to stand for the photo. You just walk in and it's yours. The paths wind through mixed woodland with enough clearings to prevent that claustrophobic feeling you get in some forests. Locals use it for dog walks and quiet morning runs, which tells you it's genuinely accessible without being trampled.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Hoe Mill Lock or The Courts Campsite are both within striking distance - this is excellent for families who need an escape from the seaside attractions in Maldon itself. Young kids will tire themselves out on the woodland trails; older children might find it a bit dull if they're after something with more structure. It's really a walker's spot, or somewhere to decompress if you've had enough of amusement arcades.

Allow 90 minutes to properly explore without rushing. Come in autumn when the light filters through properly, not summer when it's thick and uninviting. Free access, open year-round, practical shoes essential after rain.
