Stockton Stone - Standing Stone

A lump of stone sticking out of the Norfolk countryside near Bungay - that's Stockton Stone. It's a standing stone, Bronze Age or thereabouts, and it's been here for thousands of years watching the landscape change around it. Not much to look at, to be honest. You'll walk out to it across fields and find a modest block of rock doing its thing, quietly, with no fanfare or visitor centre to explain what you're looking at.

That's rather the appeal though. Archaeological sites in East Anglia can feel a bit thin on the ground - this isn't Stonehenge or the Rollright Stones - but if you're into prehistory or just enjoy the oddness of ancient monuments in working farmland, it rewards the effort. The walk there is pleasant enough, and you get a real sense of how these things sit in the landscape without any modern clutter.

Walkers will get more out of this than casual visitors. Allow an hour if you're making a trip of it, less if you're passing through the area. It's free to visit - there's no gatehouse or admission charge - though you should respect that you're crossing private land.

If you're based at Wardley Hill Campsite or The Wildings Elms Meadow just down the road from Bungay, this makes a decent leg-stretch between longer outings. Not a highlight of a Norfolk holiday, but a solid piece of local history that breaks up the day. Bring a camera if you're into monument documentation - the stone photographs better than it reads from a distance.
