Waveney Wildlife

The Waveney valley near Bungay is proper wildlife watching territory, and this stretch along the river is where you actually see what all the fuss is about. The Waveney itself does most of the work - it's a slow, meandering river that attracts kingfishers, herons, and if you're lucky, otters slipping through the water at dusk. The banks are lined with reed beds and alder carr woodland, exactly the kind of habitat that gets naturalists excited.

This works best for patient types - birdwatchers and walkers who don't mind standing still for twenty minutes waiting for something to happen. Children can enjoy spotting the obvious stuff (swans, ducks) but might find it a bit slow if they're after more action. Spring and early summer are genuinely good times; you'll catch migrant warblers and breeding birds defending territory.

There's no formal visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. The walking here is easy enough, mostly flat paths along the riverbank, though the ground can be boggy after rain. You're looking at a couple of hours to do it properly without rushing. Binoculars are essential, not optional.

Camped nearby? Wardley Hill is barely a mile away, and Dawn Chorus Holidays' farm glamping (2.4 miles) would suit you well if you want to combine wildlife watching with something more comfortable than a tent. The Wildings and Green Haven are further out but still reasonable bases for exploring this corner of Norfolk.
