The course sits on high moorland just outside Sheffield, and the views across South Yorkshire are proper stunning on a clear day. Stocksbridge Golf Club is an 18-hole layout that doesn't pretend to be championship standard, but that's rather the point - it's a proper members' club where visitors are genuinely welcome, not squeezed in between tee times.

You get a genuine moorland experience here. The greens are well-maintained, the rough is unforgiving (as moorland rough tends to be), and there's enough elevation change to work your legs as well as your swing. It's the sort of course where you need to think your way round rather than simply bash the ball. Golfers of middling ability will find it testing but fair.

If you're staying at Hoodlands Farm Campsite nearby, this is an easy 20-minute drive and breaks up a week nicely. It's not a destination course that demands a weekend trip on its own, but as part of a South Yorkshire golf tour or a walk-and-play break, it fills the bill perfectly. The club's straightforward and unpretentious - you won't find spa facilities or a Michelin-starred restaurant, just proper golf on honest moorland.

Visitors are best advised to ring ahead to arrange a round. Weekday play tends to be more relaxed than weekends. Allow a full four hours minimum, longer if you're not a quick player.
