About Stocks reservoir
This is walkers' territory, not a place to bring restless toddlers expecting a visitor centre and a gift shop. If you're comfortable with uneven terrain and don't mind the occasional squelch underfoot, you'll find it genuinely quiet. Birdwatchers do well here too - cormorants, grebes and the occasional osprey turn up. The reservoir itself is deep and dark, ringed by conifer plantation that's matured enough now to feel less like a timber farm and more like woodland.
It's free to roam, and there's parking at the main access point near Clitheroe. Allow two to three hours for a decent circular walk if you're not rushing. Best visited outside school holidays when it's less crowded, though "crowded" here still means you might see more sheep than people.
Stay at Peaks and Pods or Calder Farm - both are within a short drive - and Stocks works perfectly as a morning walk before exploring the wider Pendle area. Not dramatic like the Lake District, but honest and properly rewarding if you're willing to put the legwork in.
