Blackhill Wood

The woodland around Blackhill, just outside Clitheroe, is proper walking territory - the kind of place you head to when you want to stretch your legs without faffing about with car parks and visitor centres. It's a mix of deciduous trees and older plantings, with a decent network of paths that loop through at various lengths depending on how energetic you're feeling.

This isn't a manicured forest trail with interpretive boards. It's the real thing - muddy in winter, sticky underfoot after rain, and absolutely rammed with bluebells if you time it right in spring. The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter, and you'll spot the odd clearing where light breaks through properly. Walkers absolutely thrive here, especially those who like the freedom to pick their own route rather than follow a marked tourist trail. Families with kids aged seven upwards will get something out of it, though under-fives might struggle with the terrain.

You're looking at allowing anything from forty minutes for a quick circuit up to a couple of hours if you want to explore properly. The whole thing's free - just turn up and walk. There's rough parking nearby, though it's not formal.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around Clitheroe - Cross Lane is barely a mile and a half away - Blackhill Wood makes for an easy half-day outing before heading back for tea. It pairs well with a visit to Clitheroe town itself or a longer walk across to Pendle Hill if the weather holds.
