Stephen's Castle Viewpoint

The walk up to Stephen's Castle Viewpoint is short but steep, and it rewards you with one of those views that makes you understand why people bothered to build anything up here in the first place. You're on the Dorset heathland north of Ringwood, scrambling through gorse and heather to reach a modest summit where the landscape just opens out - it's not dramatic in a postcard sense, but there's a real sense of elevation that the rolling heath below doesn't quite suggest from the road.

The viewpoint itself is straightforward. There's an information board explaining the history and ecology, the sort of thing that takes five minutes to read properly. The castle in question is Iron Age, though you won't see much beyond earthworks if you're expecting Corfe-style drama. What you do get is a proper sense of scale - how the ancient builders chose this spot, what they could see coming from miles away across the heathland.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the archaeology; walkers will like the accessible climb and the chance to cover some ground across open heath. Children can manage it without complaint, though there's nothing to keep them occupied once you've reached the top beyond the view itself. Allow forty minutes to an hour for the whole thing, longer if you're reading the interpretation carefully.

It works well alongside Hill Cottage Farm Caravan Park in Fordingbridge - just a few miles south - as a half-day activity. The heathland around here is proper wild for southern England, and the viewpoint gives you a good handle on the landscape you're exploring.
