Ringwood Forest

The New Forest sprawls across this corner of Dorset with Ringwood Forest at its heart - dense woodland that feels properly wild despite being well within reach of civilization. You're walking through ancient heathland and thick pine, the sort of place where you'll actually spot wild ponies and deer if you're quiet enough early on. The forest floor is soft underfoot, trails wind through clearings, and on a decent day the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely lovely.

Walkers will get far more from this than casual visitors. There's no visitor centre or attractions in the traditional sense - just woodland, paths, and space. Bring proper boots if the ground's been wet, as parts can turn boggy. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want anything beyond a quick stroll. The whole point is the walk itself, not a destination.

Ringwood town sits right at the edge, so it's easy to combine with supplies or lunch. If you're staying at Ashley Heath Caravan Park or Forest Edge Holiday Park nearby, you're literally minutes from the forest entrance. The New Forest National Park has its own visitor infrastructure and bigger attractions if you want them, but Ringwood Forest itself is the quiet option - perfect for families who want their kids actually tired out, not entertained at a gift shop.

Best visited spring through autumn when you're not wading through mud. Winter walks are possible but can be grim. Free to access, naturally - it's common land.
