Budgen's Copse

The New Forest isn't short of woodland walks, but Budgen's Copse near Ringwood offers something a bit different - a proper managed forest with clear paths that don't disappear into boggy chaos halfway through. It's a straightforward spot for a couple of hours if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Ashley Heath or Hill Cottage Farm in Fordingbridge.

What you get is ancient woodland the way it's meant to be walked - accessible enough for families with younger legs, but with enough cover and quiet corners to feel like an actual escape. The trees are dense enough that even on busy weekends it feels peaceful. No cafes, no visitor centre, no fanfare - just forest.

Walkers will find the terrain manageable, though it's worth wearing proper boots after rain because it does get muddy. History types won't find dramatic ruins or plaques, but the landscape itself tells you you're somewhere old. Kids won't get restless for the first hour at least, though a four-year-old might flag after that.

Really it's the sort of place that works best combined with other stops - pair it with a proper walk on the Forest's open heathland, or use it as the morning stretch before heading to Ringwood for lunch. Free to access, free to wander, free to ignore the people telling you the New Forest needs a visitor pass to enjoy. It doesn't.
