Starkies Wood

The woodland paths at Starkies Wood wind through dense Fife forest just outside Leven, offering a proper escape from the coast without having to venture far. The reserve itself isn't massive - you're looking at a couple of hours maximum to do the main trails - but it's the sort of place where you'll actually spot something: roe deer aren't uncommon, and if you're quiet enough in early morning you might catch red squirrels. The paths are well-maintained, mostly flat, which means it works for families with younger kids or anyone who doesn't fancy steep climbs.

Access is straightforward and free, though facilities are sparse - no visitor centre or café, so bring water. Spring's the best time if you want bluebells; autumn when the light's low and golden is honestly just as good for a walk. It's close enough to Leven Beach Holiday Park and Silverburn Park that you could easily fit it into a wider Fife coast holiday without eating up a whole day. From Wigwam Holidays up at Crail way, it's a decent drive but worth it if you're looking for woodland rather than another beach stop.

This isn't a destination in itself - it's the sort of place you slot in between other things. Fine for a morning ramble, good for blowing off steam with restless teenagers, but don't expect dramatic viewpoints or rare wildlife spectacles. It's just decent, accessible woodland. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
