The trees here are proper old-growth stuff - oak, ash and beech that tower overhead, creating that cathedral-like canopy you get in England's best woodlands. On a summer morning, the light filters through in shafts that make the whole place feel rather magical.

Walkers will love the network of footpaths that crisscross the wood, though don't expect waymarking at every turn. This isn't a manicured nature reserve - it's working woodland where you might stumble across a deer if you're quiet enough. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper boots are essential.

Families with younger children might find it a bit challenging as some sections are quite steep and the terrain uneven. But older kids who enjoy a bit of adventure will have a field day building dens and spotting wildlife. Bird watchers should bring binoculars - the variety here is impressive.
