Stansmore Park

The heath and woodland here feel properly wild, even though you're only minutes from Stoke-on-Trent's suburbs. Stansmore Park is a proper nature reserve - the kind of place where you actually spot things rather than just walk through scenery. Open heathland mixed with birch and pine woodland means the habitat shifts every few hundred metres, which keeps things interesting.

Walkers get the most out of it. The trails aren't marked like a country park would be, so you need a bit of map sense or willingness to wander. Birdwatchers come specifically for the populations here - heathland specialists that you won't find everywhere. It's not a manicured destination. Muddy boots territory. The light through the pines in late afternoon is something else, mind.

You'll want at least ninety minutes to do it properly, longer if you're serious about spotting wildlife. There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities really - bring water. Best visited outside school holidays if you want peace. Spring and early autumn are cracking times, when the heath looks its best and insects are still active.

If you're based at Woodview Caravan Site just down the road, this makes an excellent morning sortie before heading to one of Staffordshire's bigger attractions. It's not flashy, and families with young children might find it a bit limited - no playground energy here. But if you like your nature reserves unmanicured and genuine, this delivers.
