Stanford in the Vale Community Wood

Twenty acres of mixed woodland just outside Faringdon, Stanford in the Vale Community Wood is the sort of place locals have probably known about for years while everyone else drives straight past. It's a proper working nature reserve - the kind where you might actually spot something rather than just walk under identical trees for forty minutes.

The woodland itself is a mix of broadleaves and conifers with a small stream running through, which means you get decent variety without it feeling overmanaged. There are a few paths threading through - nothing strenuous, just straightforward walking. You're looking at an hour to do it properly without rushing, maybe ninety minutes if you stop to watch birds or genuinely lose yourself in the atmosphere.

This works best for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground and people who actually like trees rather than people who just think they should like trees. History types might poke around the edges - there's clearly been human activity here for ages - but don't come expecting excavations or plaques. If you're staying at Evelyns Garden Glamping up the road, it's genuinely useful as a morning wander before heading elsewhere. The Faringdon area has other bits worth your time, but this isn't a showstopper on its own.

Free access, as far as anyone can tell. No visitor centre or facilities, so bring water. Best in spring and early summer when the undergrowth isn't choking the paths, though autumn's decent if you want fewer people about.
