Nursery Plantation

Walking into Nursery Plantation near Faringdon feels like stumbling into someone's private woodland - all quiet paths and proper old trees. It's a genuine forest rather than the landscaped kind, so you get that sense of actually being somewhere real rather than walking through a manicured attraction.

This is oak and beech country, and in autumn it's properly lovely - the light comes through the canopy in shafts, and the forest floor crunches underfoot with leaves. There's no formal trail infrastructure that I could see, which means it's a bit more adventurous than some managed woodlands. Bring a decent map or phone signal because it's easy to wander off course.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find it a touch aimless unless you're the type who enjoys rambling without a destination. You could easily lose an hour or two here, though there's no café or facilities to speak of - bring water.

It works well as a morning outing if you're based at Lincoln Farm Park Partnership or Cotswold Edge Caravan & Camping - both are within easy driving distance. The nearby Faringdon itself has a decent high street for lunch afterwards. Free admission as far as I could tell, and you can wander at your own pace, though the real pleasure here is in the forest itself rather than any specific feature or viewpoint. A proper walk rather than a tick-box stop.
