St Wilfrid's Church : Ottringham

The tower of St Wilfrid's rises unexpectedly from the flat Yorkshire landscape around Ottringham, a village about ten miles east of Hull. It's a proper medieval church - mostly 14th and 15th century - and the kind of place that makes you wonder how many people actually stop to look at it as they drive past.

Inside, the church is straightforward and honest rather than showy. There's some decent stained glass, a solid stone font, and the sort of worn wooden pews that suggest centuries of worshippers. The chancel's worth a look if you can get close enough. What strikes you most is how quiet it is - no gift shop, no crowds, just the building and you.

This isn't a destination on its own, frankly. You'll spend twenty minutes wandering round, maybe thirty if you're into church architecture and want to read the information boards properly. It's the sort of stop you make when you're already in the area - perhaps basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks like Little Otchan Glamping or Parkdean Resorts Withernsea Sands. If you're doing a broader tour of East Yorkshire's ecclesiastical buildings, it deserves a detour. Otherwise, it's better suited to walkers exploring the village and the surrounding polder landscape.

Assuming it follows typical church conventions, entry should be free, and you can usually visit during daylight hours. The flat terrain makes it accessible for most people, though there's not much beyond the building itself to occupy families with small children.
