St Tecla's Church

The walk to St Tecla's Church takes you through proper Mid Wales countryside, which is half the point. It's perched above Presteigne in a landscape that feels genuinely remote, even though you're minutes from a functioning town. The church itself is small and ancient - the kind of place where the roof looks like it's been thinking about leaking for about 400 years but somehow hasn't quite committed to it.

What you get is a genuine medieval church, not a heritage centre masquerading as one. There's no gift shop. No coffee stand. Just stone walls, a bit of stained glass, and the kind of peace that makes you remember why people built churches in unlikely places. The setting matters more than the building itself - you're standing high enough to see across the valley, and on a clear day it's proper lovely.

This works brilliantly if you're doing a walking holiday in the area - combine it with Presteigne Holiday Park or the glamping at Hush Hush, then make the church part of a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself. Families with older kids won't mind the walk. Young children might get restless after ten minutes inside. History enthusiasts will appreciate the bones of it, though don't expect extensive signage or interpretation.

Access and opening times aren't reliable enough to make this a guaranteed stop - ring ahead if you're banking on getting inside. The real attraction is the walk and the setting. If you're staying nearby and the weather's decent, it's absolutely worth the detour.
