Hanter Hill

The walk up Hanter Hill rewards you with proper views across the Radnorshire landscape - moorland rolling away in all directions, and on a clear day you can pick out the Brecon Beacons to the south. It's not a major peak, but that's rather the point. The climb from Presteigne takes about ninety minutes at a steady pace, and you're unlikely to encounter crowds.

This is walkers' terrain pure and simple. The path meanders through rough grassland and heather, with a few boggy patches that catch you out if you're not watching your footing. The summit itself is a bit underwhelming - a cairn on open moor - but the views make the effort worthwhile. On a grey day it's less inspiring, so pick your weather.

Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the trudge tedious without a clear payoff once they reach the top. Serious hillwalkers will find it a pleasant leg-stretcher rather than a proper challenge. Allow three hours for the round trip if you're stopping to take in the views.
