Old Radnor Hill

The walk up Old Radnor Hill from the village below takes about forty minutes if you're not dawdling, though most people do. It's a proper climb - steep in places, muddy when wet - but the reward is a panorama across the Radnor Valley that justifies every huffed breath. On a clear day you can see right across Mid Wales, rolling hills stacked like waves all the way to the horizon.

At the top sits an Iron Age hillfort, the ramparts still visible as earthen banks cutting across the summit. You can walk the perimeter and imagine what the view meant to ancient Britons - control, warning, safety. The fort itself isn't excavated or presented with interpretation boards, so you'll need to bring a bit of imagination, but that's part of the charm. No crowds, no gift shop, just you and history.

It's ideal for walkers with decent fitness and families with older kids who won't complain about the gradient. You're looking at two to three hours round trip depending on pace and how long you linger at the top. The path is marked but can get boggy in winter, so proper boots matter.

Presteigne sits just 2.5 miles away - close enough for a morning walk before heading to Presteigne Holiday Park or one of the glamping spots nearby. The climb works well as a half-day activity that leaves you free for exploring the market town's Georgian streets afterwards. Worth the slog.
