St Rhychwyn’s Church, Llanrhychwyn

You'll find this little medieval church tucked into the hills above Llanrwst, and it's genuinely one of those places that stops you in your tracks. St Rhychwyn's sits alone in the Conwy Valley with a view that stretches for miles - proper countryside, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. The building itself dates back to the 15th century, all grey stone and simple lines, with a bell tower that's been rung for over 500 years.

Inside it's wonderfully unpretentious. Plain whitewashed walls, basic wooden pews, and an old font that's seen generations of local baptisms. There's none of the polished grandeur you get in cathedral towns - this is a working church where locals still worship, which gives it real character. The walk up is worth doing properly rather than driving; the lane gets steep towards the end but the effort pays off when you reach it.

It's brilliant for walkers exploring the Conwy Valley, especially if you're based at Conwy Valley Touring Park or Maenan Abbey nearby. Historians will appreciate the medieval masonry and the sense of continuity, though you won't need more than half an hour here unless you're the contemplative type. There's no café or visitor facilities, so come prepared. No admission charge as far as anyone can tell - these old Welsh churches tend to stay open during daylight hours. Best visited on a clear day when the valley view is actually worth the climb. Don't expect crowds; that's precisely the point of coming here.
