St Peter's Church, Edgmond

The church sits in the village of Edgmond, a few miles south of Market Drayton, and it's one of those parish churches that stops you mid-stride. St Peter's has medieval bones - proper old stonework - though like most churches, it's been through various hands over the centuries. The interior is straightforward rather than showy: you get the usual fixtures, some decent timber work, and the kind of peace that comes with old stone walls and high ceilings.

This is one for history walkers or anyone doing a slow tour of Shropshire's religious architecture. It won't take hours - thirty minutes is realistic unless you're the type to sit with a church guide for a while - but it's the sort of place that rewards a quiet visit. The graveyard's worth a wander too if you like reading old stones.

It works well as a leg-stretch during a caravan holiday at Ted's Farm or either of the glamping sites nearby - Shropshire Glamping and Westcott Woods are both within six miles, so perfectly manageable for a morning outing. If you're basing yourself in the area for a week, add it to a route that takes in other villages rather than making the journey specifically. The village itself is small and rural, which is fine if that's your thing, but don't expect shops or tea rooms on the doorstep.
