St Peter, Monk Soham

The church sits quietly in Monk Soham, a village that feels properly removed from the Suffolk main roads. St Peter's is a proper medieval church - the sort of place where you half expect a vicar from a 1950s detective novel to emerge from the vestry. The building itself dates back centuries, with that distinctive Suffolk flint and stone work that marks so many rural churches in this part of East Anglia.

This works brilliantly as a stop if you're based around Woodbridge, which is only a short drive away and has proper shops and cafes. If you're glamping at Savage Glamping nearby, it's an easy morning trip - the sort of thing that takes an hour including a churchyard sit-down. Free to visit, as most parish churches are, though donations are always welcome. Go on a weekday if you want the place entirely to yourself. Weekends see the occasional worshipper, which somehow feels right.
