St Oswald's Church

The church sits quietly in the Powys countryside, about twenty minutes from Oswestry - the kind of place you'd drive past without noticing if you weren't specifically looking. St Oswald's is a working parish church with genuine medieval bones, though it's been fiddled with over the centuries like most parish churches have. Inside, you'll find proper old stonework, some decent window glass, and the sort of peace that only comes from being miles from anywhere.

It's worth a stop if you're into old churches, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites - Fairhaven or Sweeney Farm are both close enough for a morning walk. The journey there is actually the point: getting off the main road and finding yourself in proper quiet countryside is what makes it worthwhile. Half an hour maximum for the visit itself, unless you're the type to sit on the pews for a bit.

Check before you go that it's open - parish churches keep their own hours and some days you'll find it locked. Admission is free, as it should be. On a clear day the walk around the churchyard is lovely, and if you're combining it with Tanat Holiday Park or exploring further afield into Mid Wales, it's a genuine piece of the landscape rather than a tick on a tourist list. Not a destination in itself, but a proper reason to slow down and explore off the beaten track.
