Llynclys Common Nature Reserve

Llynclys Common sits on the border between Powys and Shropshire, just outside Oswestry, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick photo stop. The reserve protects a sprawling area of heathland and wetland - boggy in places, which means decent walking boots are non-negotiable. You'll find paths that loop through acid grassland dotted with heather, gorse, and if you're lucky in spring, sundew plants clinging to the waterlogged bits.

It's genuinely worth the detour if you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Sweeney Farm Glamping or Tanat Holiday Park put you minutes away. The reserve works best for serious walkers and nature types rather than families after a quick leg-stretch, though kids who like spotting birds and insects will get something from it. Allow at least an hour, ideally two if you're taking it slowly and doing a full circuit.

Admission appears to be free, and there's no gated entrance to worry about - just turn up and get going. The landscape here feels properly wild compared to manicured nature reserves; it's the sort of place where you'll understand why people move to Mid Wales for the space and silence. Spring and early summer are best for flowers and wildlife activity. Winter is bleaker but quieter if solitude is what you're after.
