St Osmund's Church

The church sits on a slight rise in Beaminster, hard to miss if you're wandering the town's narrow lanes. St Osmund's is a proper medieval affair - all honey-coloured stone and pointed arches - with enough history baked into its walls to keep you occupied for a good twenty minutes, longer if you're into that sort of thing.

Inside, there's decent medieval carving on the capitals and some rather good roof timbers if you look up. The building itself tells you more about Dorset's past than any museum placard could manage. It's the sort of place where you can actually sit down and have a moment without someone trying to sell you a postcard.

Worth pairing with a walk around Beaminster itself - the town's worth a proper look. If you're based at one of the glamping spots nearby (Swallowfield is only four miles away, Dorset Forest Garden not much further), it makes for an easy stop between countryside walks. Hidden Valley Dorset, six miles off, gives you another excuse to venture out.

The church is free to wander, though opening hours aren't always posted online - best to check locally or ring ahead. It's not the sort of attraction that'll eat up half your day, but that's rather the point. You'll get more value from it than from some oversized visitor centre, and Beaminster has enough decent pubs and tea spots to make an afternoon of it.
