Melbury Lake

The water at Melbury Lake sits remarkably still most mornings, reflecting the Dorset countryside like a mirror someone forgot to hang. It's a proper little spot - nothing flashy, just a lake where locals come to breathe and anglers come to cast. The walk around it takes a good hour without rushing, and the banks are gentle enough that even restless kids won't complain too much about the distance.

What you get is peace, mainly. A place to sit with a flask and watch the light change across the water, or to bring binoculars if you're into birds. It's close enough to Yeovil that you won't spend your whole morning driving, yet far enough out that you'll forget about the town entirely. The landscape around here is properly green - rolling fields that remind you why people move to Dorset in the first place.

If you're based at Swallowfield Glamping or Dorset Forest Garden Glamping, both within easy reach, this works as a half-day excursion without feeling like a chore. Bring wellies if it's been wet - the paths can get soft underfoot - and don't expect facilities. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, no numbered waypoints. It's just you and the lake.

Best visited when the light's low - either early morning or late afternoon - when the water actually earns the effort. Winter brings its own appeal if you don't mind the cold.
