Melbury Park

Melbury Park sits tucked away near Yeovil in deepest Dorset, and it's the sort of place that rewards you for bothering to find it. The reserve isn't massive, so allow yourself a couple of hours to do the main routes without rushing.

It works brilliantly as a morning stop if you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Swallowfield or Dorset Forest Garden are both within easy reach and offer proper bases for exploring the wider area. Parents with kids under ten will find the gentle gradient suits them well, though older children might want something with more drama. Birdwatchers and butterfly enthusiasts take this seriously - spring and early summer are when the reserve really shines, if you want to time it right.

The whole thing is free, which is refreshing. You won't find crowds, and that's entirely the point. It's not flashy or Instagram-ready - it's just a functioning piece of Dorset that people genuinely care about.
