St. Nicholas's Church, Chaldon Herring (East Chaldon), Dorset

The 12th-century church sits in the quiet village of East Chaldon, a short drive south of Dorchester, and it's genuinely worth the detour if you're exploring Dorset's rural churches. What makes St. Nicholas's special isn't the building itself - though the Norman chancel arch is solid enough - but the wall paintings inside. Someone, centuries ago, covered the interior with frescoes depicting biblical scenes and saints. They've faded considerably, but on a clear day the light catches them in ways that make you squint and lean in close, trying to decode what you're looking at.

The paintings date from around the 13th century, which means they've survived the Reformation, centuries of whitewash, and general neglect. The Doom painting above the chancel arch - showing the Last Judgement in all its grim detail - is the main draw. It's not as vivid as frescos you'd see in Italy, but there's something more moving about it precisely because it's worn and fragmentary. You piece it together yourself rather than having it handed to you pristine.

Allow 20 minutes inside, maybe another 10 if you're the type to sit quietly and stare. No admission fee as far as I can tell - just push the church door and step in.
