St Mungo's Church

The church sits in a quiet corner near Hexham, and honestly, it's the sort of place you'd walk past if you weren't looking for it. St Mungo's is a modest medieval building, nothing flashy, just solid stone and history. The interior has that particular smell all old churches share - damp stone, wood polish, time itself. What strikes you most isn't the grand architecture but the fact that people have been worshipping here for centuries, often in rather difficult circumstances given the Border history of this part of Northumberland.

It's worth a stop if you're into ecclesiastical architecture or have an interest in how ordinary parish churches operated away from grand cathedral fanfare. The churchyard offers a moment of genuine quiet - increasingly rare. You won't need more than 20 or 30 minutes here unless you're doing brass rubbings or the sort of detailed historical investigation that appeals to a particular kind of visitor.

If you're based at one of the nearby camps - Sycamore Glamping Pods is excellent and only 3.8 miles away, or Stonehaugh Campsite if you want a more traditional setup - St Mungo's makes a pleasant leg-stretch on a morning walk before heading into Hexham proper for coffee. Pair it with a ramble through the Tyne Valley and you've got a proper half-day sorted. Don't expect it to be a main attraction, but as a quiet place to sit and think, it does the job.
