St Michael’s, Sollers Hope

Finding this tiny Norman church feels like stumbling across a forgotten corner of medieval England. St Michael's sits in complete isolation in the Herefordshire countryside, reached only by a rough track that makes you question whether you've taken a wrong turn. The building itself is wonderfully simple - a single-cell structure with thick stone walls and original Norman features that have survived nearly a thousand years.

Families might struggle with the access - the track from Fownhope isn't brilliant for pushchairs and there's no facilities whatsoever. Allow half an hour for the visit itself, though you'll want longer just to soak up the atmosphere.

Staying at nearby Caplor Glamping or White House on Wye Glamping puts you within easy striking distance. It's well worth combining with a walk along the Wye Valley - this stretch between Fownhope and Hoarwithy has some proper lovely countryside that doesn't get nearly enough attention.
