St Michael and All Angels

The church sits on a slight rise in the village, and you spot the tower long before you reach the door. St Michael and All Angels is a proper medieval building with enough character to make you want to stay longer than the five minutes most people allow. The interior's got that cool church smell - old stone, polish, and something indefinably ancient. Original features from centuries of worship are dotted about if you bother to look: carved misericords, old wall paintings, the sort of details that make you realise people have been coming here to pray since before most of England's castles were built.

It's the kind of stop that works brilliantly if you're walking through Buckinghamshire rather than planning your day around it. If you're camped at Embers Camping in Claydon, it's only a short drive north to Buckingham, which makes it an easy add-on to a Sunday morning explore. History types and people who actually care about medieval architecture will spend a solid hour poking about. Others will spend twenty minutes, take some photos, and move on - both are fine.

Free to enter, open during reasonable daylight hours (this is a working church, so check locally for services). The churchyard's worth a wander too, peaceful enough to make you forget the traffic on the A413. Buckingham itself has proper pubs and a decent high street if you want to stretch your legs after.
