St Michael & All Angel's Church : Hathersage

The churchyard sits on a rise above Hathersage village, and the first thing you notice is how the Peak District hills frame everything - proper dramatic backdrop. St Michael & All Angels is a solid medieval church with enough history clinging to its stones to keep architecture buffs occupied for half an hour, though casual visitors might spend fifteen minutes inside before heading back out.

What draws people here, honestly, is the Robin Hood connection. Local legend claims Little John was buried in the churchyard - there's a grave marked with a stone, and whether you buy into it or not, it's the sort of thing that makes kids actually interested in a church visit. The church itself has the usual medieval appeal - decent stonework, some interesting monuments inside, nothing that'll knock your socks off but solid enough.

You can walk there easily from any of the nearby campsites. North Lees Campsite is barely a mile away, making it a quick stroll that works well with young families. The village of Hathersage itself is charming enough - a proper working Peak District settlement with a decent pub and decent views. Free to look around the churchyard and church, which matters when you're on a caravan holiday and watching the pennies.

Best suited to history types and anyone doing the Peak District village trail. It's not a headline attraction, but it fits nicely into a morning walk from Castleton Caravan or Derbyshire Hills Campsite. Allow an hour maximum including the village wander.
