St Mary's Church, Tenby

The moment you spot St Mary's Church rising from Tenby's skyline, you understand why this place has mattered for nearly 500 years. It's the tallest building in town - a proper statement in stone that you can see from the beach, from the harbour, from almost anywhere that matters. The church itself is sandstone-built, a late medieval structure with a tower that's become the unofficial mascot of this small Welsh coastal town.

Inside, there's genuine beauty: high ceilings, decent stained glass, and the kind of quiet that makes you actually stop and think rather than just shuffle through. The walk up to it from the town centre takes about five minutes - nothing strenuous, though the streets are cobbled so comfortable shoes matter.

It works best for history types and anyone after a moment away from the beach crowds. Kids won't linger long unless they're into old buildings, though the tower views are worth asking about if they're open. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough, with decent sightlines over the rooftops down to the water.

Admission is free (it's a working church, after all), and you can visit most days during daylight hours. If you're camping at Saltern Holiday Park just down the road - barely a fifteen-minute walk - or staying at Haven Kiln Park, it's an easy add-on to an afternoon in town. Pop in before grabbing lunch at one of the harbourside spots. Ten minutes inside is enough; don't expect to spend an hour here. It's good for what it is - a proper bit of Tenby character - but not a reason to plan your whole trip around.
