St. Mary’s Beauly

The moment you walk into St. Mary's Beauly, you're confronted with serious Scottish medieval architecture. This is a proper 13th-century ruin - not the manicured church-visiting experience you might be expecting, but something rawer and more affecting. The roofless nave opens to the sky, buttresses still standing proud, and if you're lucky with the light, it's genuinely moving.

What strikes you most is the scale. The eastern end retains three lancet windows that would have flooded the interior with light centuries ago. The stonework on these is intricate enough to remind you that medieval craftsmen weren't making do with scraps - they were building something to last. You can walk around freely, tracing the outline of what was once the chancel, running your hand along walls that survived the Reformation and centuries of Scottish weather.
