Carn a' Chlàrsair (Harper's Cairn)

A modest stone cairn sits on the moorland just outside Beauly, marking where a harper was supposedly buried centuries ago. The story goes that a travelling musician met his end here - whether by choice or circumstance, the Highlands keep that particular secret. It's not exactly a grand monument. What you get is a weathered pile of stones, the kind of thing you might walk past without noticing if someone hadn't bothered to mark it.

The real appeal is the walk to reach it and what the landscape tells you about how people lived in these glens. This is proper hill country, and the cairn sits on terrain that rewards a bit of exploring. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Beauly Holiday Park is closest at just over three miles - this works as a half-morning diversion rather than a main event. The surrounding countryside is the real draw: rolling hills, open vistas, and genuine quiet. Worth the detour if you're already in the area and enjoy a bit of off-the-beaten-track exploring, but don't plan a trip around it alone.
