Beauly Memorial Fountain

There's a rather striking Victorian fountain sitting in the heart of Beauly, right where the high street opens up. It's the sort of thing you walk past a dozen times before actually stopping to look at it properly - which is a shame, because it's genuinely worth a minute or two of your time.

The fountain dates back to the 1880s and was built as a memorial, though the exact details of who or what it commemorates aren't immediately obvious from a casual visit. It's all ornate stonework and period detail, very much of its time. The craftsmanship is decent enough if you're into Victorian architecture, but it's not going to blow your mind - it's more of a 'oh, that's rather nice' moment than a destination in itself.

That said, if you're staying at Beauly Holiday Park or any of the other caravan spots in the area - Bunchrew, Coulmore Bay - you're already in the village anyway. Pop into town for lunch or an ice cream and you'll stumble right past it. The memorial sits in a reasonable spot for a wander around Beauly's streets, which are pleasant enough without being remarkable.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it, particularly those interested in Victorian monuments. It's free to view, obviously, and takes about five minutes maximum. Not a reason to make a special trip into the Highlands, but a decent little piece of local character if you're in the area. Beauly itself has a ruined priory worth a look if you're after something with more substance.
