St Mary the Virgin's Church, Hastingleigh

The lane from Hythe winds up through proper Kentish countryside before you spot the squat tower of St Mary the Virgin's poking above the village of Hastingleigh. It's not one of those showy medieval churches - this is the real deal, built with flint and stone in a way that feels genuinely ancient rather than restored to death.

Inside, the nave is narrow and low-ceilinged, which gives the whole space an intimate quality that larger churches just can't match. The walk through the village itself is pleasant enough, and there's real peace once you're through the door. Free to visit, as far as I can tell, though dropping something in the box is the decent thing.
