St Margaret's Church, Millington

A solid 12th-century parish church sitting quietly in the village of Millington, just a short drive from York. St Margaret's isn't going to blow your mind with architectural fireworks, but it's the kind of place that rewards a gentle wander - proper medieval stonework, a decent interior, and the sort of peaceful churchyard that makes you actually want to sit down for ten minutes.

The church itself is straightforward: nave, chancel, a tower you can clock from the road. Inside, there's enough medieval detail to keep history types interested without needing a degree in ecclesiastical architecture to appreciate it. The real appeal is the walk itself. Millington sits in lovely rolling countryside, and combining a church visit with a stomp across the Wolds works well if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Wolds Glamping Pods is barely three miles away, or Yapham Holds if you want something slightly further out.

Free to visit, obviously, and you can pop in whenever the door's unlocked - no tourist office nonsense. Allow twenty minutes inside, longer if you're the type to read every memorial plaque. The village car park is tucked away but manageable. Best avoided on a rainy Tuesday when the light's grey and the whole place feels a bit shut-in. Come on a clear morning instead, park up, walk it, then head into York for lunch. It's that kind of church - useful rather than unmissable, but absolutely worth the detour if you're touring the area.
