St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church

You'll spot the red-brick Victorian tower from the main road into Leyburn - it's impossible to miss, really. St. Joan of Arc is a proper statement church, built in the 1870s when the Catholic community here was small enough that constructing something this ambitious felt almost defiant. Inside, the light floods through the windows and hits the altar with this sudden warmth that catches you off guard.

It's worth a brief visit if you're walking around Leyburn itself, though don't expect to spend more than twenty minutes unless you're genuinely into Victorian ecclesiastical architecture. The church is still very much active - you might catch a service or find it locked outside worship times, which is fairly standard. The real appeal is the exterior and the sense of place it gives you. This is a building that tells you something about Yorkshire's religious past and the determination of immigrants who wanted their faith represented in stone.

If you're staying at Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park or Eastfield Glamping Farm nearby, the church makes a natural pause during a morning stroll into town. Leyburn itself is charming enough - proper market town with decent pubs and cafes - but the church is the architectural highlight. It's particularly striking if you catch it on a clear day when the brickwork shows its age honestly, neither prettified nor neglected. Not a must-do, but if you're in the area, the detour's worthwhile.
