St Ives Harbour

The working harbour at St Ives is the real deal - fishing boats still unload their catch here, and the whole place smells of salt and diesel in the best possible way. You're not looking at some prettified tourist attraction; this is where locals actually work. The narrow streets around it are packed with galleries and cafes, but the water's the draw. Watch the boats come and go, grab a pasty from one of the proper bakeries nearby, and you've got a solid hour or two sorted.

It's free to wander the harbour itself, though parking in town is the usual nightmare on summer weekends. Come early morning if you want photos without crowds, or late afternoon when the light turns golden and the day-trippers have cleared off. Families with older kids will enjoy spotting fishing activity, though very small children might lose interest once they've looked at the boats twice.

The harbour works brilliantly as a day trip base - stay at one of the nearby parks like Polmanter Touring Park or Haven Riviere Sands and you're only twenty minutes from the seafront. It's worth building an afternoon around, combining it with a walk along the coastal path or a visit to Tate St Ives if you're into modern art. The whole town trades on being arty and upmarket these days, and the harbour is where that story actually began - proper fishing village made good.
