St Helens sits in the countryside a few miles outside York - not the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident, but worth the short drive if medieval churches are your thing. It's a proper village church, the kind that's been doing its job quietly for centuries without much fuss. Inside, the real draw is the stonework and the sense that you're standing where people have stood for nearly 900 years. There's something about that continuity that gets to you in a way a cathedral's grandeur sometimes doesn't.

This one appeals most to church enthusiasts and local history types rather than casual tourists. You won't spend hours here - thirty minutes is realistic unless you're really into brass rubbings and medieval architecture. Free admission as a rule with these places, though do check ahead as opening times can be unpredictable.

If you're staying at one of the local glamping spots - Acorn Glade is barely four miles away, or The Spinney if you prefer proper camping - St Helens works nicely as a morning or afternoon wander between park time and exploring York itself. The village setting means there's a walk involved, which breaks up the day rather pleasantly. The real advantage is you're close enough to York's big attractions yet far enough out to feel like you've found something actual locals know about, rather than what the guidebooks push.
