St Helens Church C of E

The tower of St Helens rises above the flatlands between Boston and the surrounding Lincolnshire countryside like a proper landmark. It's the sort of church that rewards a detour if you're already camping nearby at Wood Farm or New Farm Holidays - not because it's spectacular, but because it's genuinely old and sits quietly in a landscape that hasn't changed much in centuries.

What you get is a medieval parish church with real bones to it. The tower dominates, but inside there's proper medieval stonework and the kind of accumulated detail that makes you realise how many centuries of people have worshipped in this exact spot. The churchyard is atmospheric too, especially on a grey Lincolnshire afternoon when the fen wind is picking up.

It's not going to fill a day, but it's ideal for walkers staying at The Layby Lincs or Waites Farm Glamping who fancy a gentle morning ramble followed by a quiet sit-down away from the campsite. Families with young kids will get restless unless they're genuinely interested in old buildings. History types and architectural photographers will find it worthwhile.

Access is generally free - most parish churches are - though opening times can be unpredictable, so don't arrive expecting guaranteed entry. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be your best bet. Allow thirty to forty minutes if you're taking it seriously, less if you're just poking your head round.
